Got in a Wreck? Take a Self-Care Day Before Returning to Work

Getting into an accident is terrifying. It can also be a hugely emotional incident that can stay with you for days or longer. It’s important to get checked by a health professional, even if you think you feel fine right now. Shock can cause many symptoms to not kick in until much later, and many injuries may not be immediately present, but come up over the next couple days. Before you dive back into reality and head back to work, make sure you are taking some time for your emotional needs.

There is Nothing Wrong with a Little "Me" Day

Even if you are able to take only one day between your accident and your return to work, make sure that it is a very restorative day. If you have a local spa that you can go to, splurge for some of the treatments you have been considering but are putting off because of the expense.


If there is not a spa, then buy a face mask, moisturizing booties, and a thick, rich all-natural oatmeal infused lotion that you are always tempted to purchase and care for your physical body from head to toe. Pour out a nice bath and put in your favorite restorative bath products, put on some music, maybe even pour yourself a glass of your favorite drink. You may notice while you are wrapped in fragrant splendor that your stress levels are coming down. You may start feeling calmer, and by the time you emerge from a hot bath, skin soft and glowing and hair silky and full of life, you will feel like an entirely new person.

Getting a Massage Can Help Identify Possible Injuries

You may not realize that you were injured. Even a low-speed, minor accident can cause pain or soft tissue damage. Seat belt injuries to the chest and shoulders are common. A massage may help you find pain you didn't realize that you had, and then it will help you start the healing process. If the pain is severe or if you are not able to use the area correctly, you should see a doctor.

Other spa treatments, like long hot soaks and some essential oils, will also help with the pain of bruised muscles. If you notice some discoloration, snap a photo of it for the insurance company, and then try our healing balm. That may help speed up the healing process of the bruise.
