Ingredient Spotlight: Activated Charcoal

If you’ve been observing natural skin care and natural beauty products in the last two years, you’ve likely seen an increase in activated charcoal as an ingredient. There are more than a handful of good reasons why it’s become so coveted in the world of natural and organic skin care - and we love it, too, which is why you’ll find it in some of our products.

Activated charcoal isn’t the same charcoal that you use to barbecue on the grill in the summertime or light a fire in your fireplace (that stuff is toxic!). Activated charcoal is carbon that's been treated to increase its absorbency. It comes in various forms, but ours is composed of ten hardwoods (oak, maple, alder, white alder, black hawthorne, birch, cherry, black walnut, and lilac). "When dirt and oil in your pores come in contact with the carbon, they stick to it and then get washed away when you rinse," explains cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson.

Plus, when you rinse away physical impurities, there’s almost a simultaneous rinsing away of mental and emotional impurities that wash away, as well.

Beyond being a powerhouse purifier that removes 100-200x its weight in impurities - including makeup, animal bites and stings, and poison ivy - activated charcoal also does wonders for the skin as a natural acne reliever.

As activated charcoal is composed of wood from ten different hardwood trees, it has naturally grounding and earthing properties that lead one to feeling stable and standing firm amidst any changes that are taking place.

Using activated charcoal-infused skin care products at any time of the year will do wonders for your skin, leading to a more healthy, vibrant complexion. As many of us are still experiencing the transition from summer into autumn (even though it’s November already!) and thus removing impurities that we acquire from spending so much time outdoors in the summertime, it’s important to remember that detoxing can take time and that cleansing is a process - and what better time to help your body release impurities and get grounded in yourself than with the change of seasons.

You can experience the benefits of activated charcoal skincare products with our Lava Terra Complexion Clay and Drift Salt Bath. Use one or the other, or to really increase the benefits of this potent natural powerhouse, use them both at the same time to remove what no longer serves you, both on your skin and in your soul. Happy detoxing!
