Ingredient Spotlight: Rose

January 30, 2015

February is upon us and it's the only month which simultaneously induces as much delight as it does anxiety for lovers and singles alike. Most of us are either feeling the suspense of being wooed by the one we fancy, the pressure to impress or actively boycotting the acknowledgment of Valentine's Day as anything other than just a typical day.

Whatever scenario best applies to you, one thing is certain: you cannot stop seeing roses everywhere!

If you've perused this website a bit, you'll notice that it's no different. There is rose in many-a-product! And while it's true that I am mildly obsessed with rose, it's for good reason. Its holistic properties are one-of-a-kind.

  • rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that aid in maintaining elasticity for youthful skin with minimal wrinkles
  • in fact, rose's antioxidant value is over 33x that of blueberries and over 150x that of spinach!
  • excellent emollient properties for moisturizing dry skin, while having a cooling effect and acting as a mild astringent
  • strong antibacterial properties that protect against infections that contribute to acne and other skin conditions
  • relieves redness and inflammation with an anti-inflammatory molecule present in rose and rose oils
  • helps improve skin texture by combating conditions like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis
  • inhaling rose essential oil helps heal wounds as it prevents water loss in the skin and lowers cortisol levels

Moreover, according to a 2010 German study, rose oil was found to increase the skin's permeability, which means that when combined with other ingredients, the rose oil helps to open the skin so that the nutrients are better absorbed!

  • useful in treating depression and has been found to reduce general anxiety disorder in postpartum women
  • for men with sexual dysfunction related to performance anxiety and stress, it's an excellent anxiety reducer
  • balances sex hormones, which can contribute to increased sex drive
  • believed to open the heart chakra so that we may experience unconditional love

In addition to its holistic health benefits, the reason rose essential oil is so precious is due to its rarity. True rose otto (rose essential oil) is cultivated from Bulgaria, Turkey and Morocco. It requires 60,000 rose blossoms, picked as they are unfolding in the early hours of dawn, to yield one ounce (28g) of rose essential oil, which is then steam-distilled. That results in costs of around $5,000 per pound.

Rose absolute, on the other hand, derives from a solvent extracted method that results in a more concentrated form of rose oil and as such, its fragrance is a lot more potent.

Rose floral water, flower water, hydrosol, hydrolat, or distillate, is the byproduct of the oil's steam distillation and while less concentrated, retains many of the same properties as those of the oil. The floral waters used in BEING products come from artisan distillers in the Pacific Northwest and Europe who only dedicate themselves to steam distillation and harvest only once a year. They use copper and sometimes stainless steel stills to process the waters through certified organic methods. The rose floral water used is from Bulgaria.

To experience the wonderful benefits of rose for yourself, there's quite a selection to choose from included in the Face and Bath Rituals. Check out the Radiance Incarnate Facial Nectar, Hold On Floral Tonic, Release Milk Bath, and Bloom Lip Service.
